Choice Meats Environmental Sustainability Brief

Choice Meats is deeply committed to environmental sustainability as part of the company’s overarching vision to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions and promote responsible production. As a brand serving both local and export markets, Choice Meats integrates sustainability into its operations — from energy use and water management to waste reduction and tree planting — reflecting its role in driving the group’s broader environmental goals.

The company’s environmental approach aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Kenya’s national climate ambitions. By embedding sustainability into every facet of its processes, Choice Meats contributes to building a resilient and low-carbon food system that sustains both business and the environment.

Our key sustainability pillars include:

Net Zero Emissions Journey

Choice Meats contributes to the broader group’s Net Zero roadmap initiated in 2022 following baseline studies by One Carbon World. The strategy focuses on reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions through cleaner energy sources, operational efficiency, and offset programs.

Decarbonization initiatives include:

  • Expanding the solar power program to increase renewable energy share. Solar energy currently contributes up to 30% of electricity demand.
  • Phasing out high-GWP refrigerants and adopting low-GWP alternatives across cold chain systems.
  • Continuous staff sensitization and energy conservation training to embed a culture of responsibility.

The Net Zero ambition targets carbon neutrality by 2030, with continuous performance tracking and supplier engagement to ensure alignment across the value chain.

Energy Management

Energy efficiency is a key pillar in Choice Meats’ sustainability framework. The division has achieved notable progress in reducing non-renewable energy consumption and improving efficiency per unit of production.

Key actions include::

  • Integration of solar power systems that contribute a growing share of total electricity use.
  • Commenced adoption of Biofuels for the transport fleet to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
  • Ongoing energy optimization programs to streamline production systems and reduce energy intensity.

Water Stewardship

Water is a critical resource in meat processing, and Choice Meats has implemented several measures to enhance efficiency and minimize waste.

Key initiatives include:

  • Installation of push-tap systems and other innovations to reduce water usage.
  • Regular audits and leak monitoring to detect and address inefficiencies.
  • Employee awareness programs promoting responsible water use throughout operations.

Waste Management and Circularity

Choice Meats upholds the company’s Zero Waste to Landfill commitment, achieved and maintained since 2024. The division actively implements reduction, reuse, and recycling principles to promote a circular economy.

Highlights include:

  • Enhanced segregation and recycling systems increasing recyclable volumes.
  • Active participation in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as members of Packaging Producer Responsibility Organization (PAKPRO).
  • Engagement of local youth groups and community partners in waste collection activities.

Tree Growing and Ecosystem Restoration

Choice Meats actively participates in tree planting and reforestation efforts across company sites and in partnership with other organizations. These initiatives contribute to carbon sequestration, soil conservation, and local biodiversity.

Efforts include:

  • Planting of thousands of trees across sites with high survival rates.
  • Partnerships with industry peers for regional reforestation projects.
  • Maintenance of a tree inventory database aligning with Kenya’s national restoration goals.

Embedding Sustainability Culture

Sustainability at Choice Meats is driven by leadership commitment and employee participation. Regular training programs, awareness sessions, and departmental targets ensure that environmental performance remains a shared responsibility.

Through internal sensitization and community partnerships, the company fosters an environmentally responsible culture that supports both operational excellence and social impact.

We continue to demonstrate leadership in sustainable meat processing through practical, measurable actions in energy, water, waste, and carbon management. This is progressively transforming operations to align with global sustainability standards, ensuring that environmental responsibility remains central to our growth and competitiveness.
